A Symbol of Abuse

If we think of being overweight as being simply a food issue we are just ineffectively scratching the surface of the problem.

Once we realise that ''eating when full'' is the cause of our excess weight, and then, in turn, realise that ''eating when full'' is what we do to suppress our emotional issues, we are really getting somewhere. We are getting to the truth of the matter!

The truth of the matter being, that unresolved emotional issues are really the leftovers of instances of abuse in our lives. That unresolved issue of fear, anger or boredom. That unresolved issue around your teacher, dad, priest or mother. This is why so many people are overweight and stay overweight all their lives. They simply do not want to ''go there.'' And because the facilities for ''going there'' are often expensive therapies, even ridiculed, little known therapies that are not mainstream yet, venturing into the unknown seems just too much trouble when one can so easily, simply ''eat when full'' - that old dysfunctional but familiar friend. Why open the can of worms so to speak?

Well every addict (and that is what ''eating when full'' is - an addiction) reaches his or her own rock bottom. It is your own personal time of revelation, that ''ah ha'' moment that wakes you up to a new and different way of being in the world. A way of being that no longer involves ''food when full'' and being overweight.

So we have to look into the three abuses. Physical, emotional and sexual. Which one happened, when, and with whom. Of course no one wants to ''go there'' but the truth will set you free and it is in facing the wound and healing the wound that you get to be free of obesity, overweight and all related health problems.

So being overweight is a symbol of abuse. When I see anyone carrying excess weight, I know they have been abused, and have not healed that wound.

Most of us, have had one, or all of the above mentioned abuses inflicted on us - a harsh truth. All obese people have had one or all of the abuses inflicted upon them. The excess weight they carry is saying ''Hey something is wrong. Something ''wrong'' happened here to cause this. Can someone please acknowledge this and address it.'' This is the subconscious message of excess weight.

What I do in my work with compulsive eaters is help them heal. Help them identify the core wounds and resolve the emotional issues so those wounds no longer cause them to eat when full and suffer from addiction to ''food when full.''
