A Journey
I often describe what I do as accompanying you on a journey. Our starting point is a place called ''Compulsive Eating'' and our destination is ''Freedom from Compulsive Eating'' or simply ''Freedom.''
The way I see it, you are slightly stuck in ''Compulsive Eating'' at the moment, and maybe even have been for quite some time. But you are not so comfortable there, and you've heard of a wonderful place that has slimness, and beauty, and happiness. Your attempts to get there have all failed.
You have hit nasty road blocks with guards that refuse to let you pass. Floods and high winds have sprung up from nowhere the minute you catch a glimpse of that beautiful, almost mythical, city called ''Freedom.'' The dark clouds swept in and instantly covered that area of land, that the minute before, had held the sight of ''Freedom.'' Darkness fell all too rapidly and frightened you.
Where is my beautiful destination now? You thought to yourself confused. I should have arrived by now. It seems as though it has been swallowed up in clouds that are growling with thunder and flashing lighting too near me for comfort. Maybe ''Compulsive Eating'' is not so bad. So back you go, frightened and confused but at least '' Compulsive Eating'' is familiar. And so, your many journeys to leave ''Compulsive Eating'' failed, and you blamed yourself, and felt bad not knowing the way out. You have always ended up trundling back to ''Compulsive Eating.''
And so a traveller sends a message from ''Freedom'' - a poster in a local shop that says - ''Come to ''Freedom.'' It is a wonderful place. It is interesting, authentic and you can live there. I can show you the way.''
And so you phone figuring you have nothing to loose. The phone call only serves to intrigue you more because this is what I tell you in that telephone conversation - 'I too lived in ''Compulsive Eating'' and tried to move many times over a five year period; and I could never find a way. The gates were locked. Those vicious guards I too encountered, and the floods, and the storms, but one day a friend showed me a back road, nothing but a track trodden in the long grass of lush fields filled with butterflies, and grazing, peaceful animals. She also showed me how to get the necessary paperwork that appeased the angry guards. She showed me how to protect myself in the thunderstorms, and see the stark beauty and strength to be found in the dark night of the Soul. She taught me how to 'live in the now' and appreciate the present moment. She taught me about the ''spaciousness'' of the landscape and the adaptability of sometimes walking and sometimes running, swimming even; and the importance of rest. Patience and persistence I too learned on that journey with my friend, over valleys and mountains, through cities and villages. And finally we arrived in ''Freedom.'' Not as shinny and bright as I had thought but certainly, as the poster said - authentic and interesting. ''Freedom'' was certainly new to me. ''Freedom'' filled me with relief and a sense of belonging that ''Compulsive Eating'' never did. I knew I would live here and, like my friend, be a guide to those who wish to travel and live in ''Freedom.''
