The Repeat of Patterns

There is an amazing function within the psyche that demands that childhood trauma be cleared. By cleared I mean healed, sorted, dealt with in such a way as to not repeat itself.

How do we know a trauma has been healed? To think about it does not cause pain anymore. In fact, we don't tend to think about it that much for its nasty tendency for popping into our mind has stopped.

Recently there has been a lot of talk about the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial and in listening to snippets of it here and there I have noticed the pattern  of Johnny being beaten and verbally abused by his mother and him being beaten and verbally abused by Ms Heard, when they were married.

This very public trial is a lesson to us all. And it is this - What is not healed will pop up again in your life. To use alcohol and drugs to deal with it, will not work but will allow the repeat of that 'old wound' to play out in your life.

The awareness of the repetition of the old trauma is a start to healing it for good. The healing continues when you take appropriate action to keep yourself safe, so you can heal, through the various modalities available today in the great big world of therapy, self-help, addiction recovery, AA etc.

So, look back on your childhood, and look in your life today (especially what triggers you) and that is where your need for healing lies. Working on that healing in whatever way you can, staying off alcohol and drugs, food when full, smoking and any other addiction, so that you can allow the awareness of your wound, is definitely part of the path.

So with Mr Depp, his awareness of the links with his childhood and his willingness to stay sober will definitely heal him and free him. He discovered that lots of money and lots of security cannot protect anyone from being brought face to face with what is not healed in their past. I personally feel he is on the right track now, and has and is, learning a warrior's lesson. He is on a hero's journey showing so many (men especially) how to handle this very real dynamic in life. We can no longer run away from our issues for they find a way to play out in our lives until we face them and heal them. As I said before - A hero's journey.

I've taken mine. Are you willing to embark on yours?
