Awareness

Awareness is a key word in giving up any addiction. Being aware you have a 'problem'. Being aware of your 'triggers'. Being aware of your patterns of behaviour. Being aware of when you are strong in the face of cravings, and when you are weak in the face of cravings.

And ultimately, in giving up any addiction one has to be aware of the underlying emotional issues that cause you to jump into that dysfunctional and dangerous habit of drink, drugs, even 'food when full' is dangerous when you observe the huge amounts of excess weight that is, quite frankly, now common to see people carrying.

Susie Orbach (author of Fat is a Feminist Issue) said that overeating was of epidemic proportions in the 1970's. And have things got better? No. Now we can easily and accurately say overeating and other addictions are a very real pandemic today. It is also accurate to say that society is okay with addiction. Drinking and smoking are ''normal''. Carrying a few extra pounds is ''normal''. Even recreational drugs and prescription drugs are ''normal''. If this is normal then addiction is normal and we have a huge problem on our hands.

Now, because ''addiction'' is not only a problem in and of itself, it is also the symptom of a deeper problem. That deeper problem is the underlying emotional issues. Unsolved resentments. Unhealed traumas. Unacknowledged pain both within the individual and the mass of individuals that make up society as we have it today. It crosses all boundaries and race, all classes and economic and educational backgrounds. In other words if you had an alcoholic father and a depressed mother it does not matter much what income they had or what race or class they were - the wounds are there - and there to be healed.

This healing is our task. This healing of our own wounds is our cure for the pandemic that has gone totally unnoticed except for in the AA or NA meetings and the world of natural healing and holistic psychology.

We have to be aware of our emotional nature and have the teachings that enable us to heal our emotional wounds. That heals addiction. Be it ''food when full'' or any other addiction, we can and will heal on a mass scale in the coming decades. This is a time of positive change, so allow it into your life by reaping the giant rewards of being aware of your habits, addictions, feelings and wounds - and seek those who can help you heal. Those who have walked this path before you and know the way out of addiction and into a life of awareness, authenticity, healing and grace. Make that journey your priority in life and your life will automatically become different, better, healthier and a real expression of your true nature as an aware, kind, strong and interesting person.
